Rye & District Chamber of Commerce are putting together plans to give Rye a floral facelift this Spring and Summer as part of their Phoenix Project – Rye rising and recovering from the lockdowns - showcasing itself to be a great place to live, work and welcome visitors.
Community Grant Funds have been applied for from Rother District Council (confirmation awaited) and Rye Town Council. These will be planting up of general areas and untended corners of the town with hanging baskets decorating businesses and buildings wherever possible.
It is hoped Sunflowers will appear in August and September in as many places as possible. The seeds will need to be planted in May and The Chamber plan to be able to distribute these in April so businesses and families can take part. This is a simple project that children can join in with and enjoy. There maybe an opportunity for a small display of Sunflower Artwork at the railway station ticket office.
The Town Clerk has confirmed that the Town Steward and his assistant will be able to give some time to working with the Chamber which is a great help and much appreciated.
This is a community project, not just for businesses, and we would welcome hearing from anyone who would like to be involved. Many residents already put on a great display in their gardens and we’d encourage others to give it a go. South East Communities Rail Partnership is particularly keen to link up with volunteers who would be interested in planting (plants provided!) and caring for the Captain Pugwash Memorial Garden outside Rye station.
Rye Blooms is not a competition! It is about making everyone feel good, the more who join in the better it will be for everyone.
A number of community groups and organizations are on board supporting Rye Blooms including Rye Heritage Centre, Rye College, E F Benson Society, National Trust, Rye Conservation Society, South East Communities Rail Partnership, Rye Castle Museum, Rye Cricket Club, St Mary’s Church and Rye Town Council. We are waiting to hear back from others.
